New Lifting Beam Improves Industry A new lifting beam is quickly reinventing the way crane operators and load handlers raise heavy equipment and materials at construction sites. Known nationally as “Selbys Arm”, the innovative breakthrough features several unique advantages over the traditional lifting beam. The lifting device was created to greatly improve safety for workers and load handlers, as well as reduce the risk of damage to buildings, payloads and even the crane itself. The lifting beam works on the principle of an internal counterweight that can be hydraulically adjusted to maintain perfect balance and stability. Featuring a centralized weight concentration designed to offset the load being carried, when held by a crane cable and swivel the lifting beam can be moved in three dimensions. For many construction projects, there is often a need to place materials and heavy equipment in a particular location without the aid of an attached loading platform. Normally hooks and ropes are used to position the load and manually pull it through an opening, an activity that can be very dangerous to both employees and the load, especially when the task is at great heights. The unique design of the Selbys Arm lifting beam now gives handlers an incredible advantage over other lifting alternatives. Heavy loads, machinery and equipment can be easily raised and safely placed through openings in upper floors of high buildings, without the need for undue counterweight adjustment while the transfer is occurring. The electric controls of the lifting beam allow both ground crews and load handlers to make small adjustments that enable precise placement of loads into smaller openings. “It is certainly a break through in safely reducing manpower”, comments co-inventor and product namesake Cloyd Selby. “We are very proud of the capabilities of the lifting beam in making materials more accessible in a safer manner at industrial sites”.
Selbys Arm is already being successfully employed at numerous construction sites, with various lifting beam models available that accommodate weight capacities ranging from 2,000 to 50,000 lbs.
Additional applications for the lifting beam have been identified at ports of call, commercial building sites, and other industrial locations.
